This class action seeks compensation for Inuit children and families in Nunavik, as well as native children living off-reserve in Quebec who are victims of systemic underfunding and discrimination regarding the provision of child and family services.
On April 30, 2024, the Superior Court of Quebec authorized this class action against the federal and the provincial governments on behalf of the following classes:
- Children of Nunavik: Inuit under the age of 18 years old, reported to or taken into care by the Director of Youth Protection in Nunavik between 1975 and the date of authorization.
- Essential services: Inuit under 18 years old who have encountered delays or denials in the receipt of essential services.
- Families of Nunavik children: Parents and grandparents who have been taking care of a member of the above class.
- Indigenous children from Quebec: Indigenous persons under 18 years old, taken into care off-reserve between 1992 and the date of authorization.
- Families of Quebec children: Parents and grandparents who have been taking care of a child in the above class prior to his or her placement.
The aim of this class action is to denounce discriminatory policies that have exacerbated intergenerational trauma, and to obtain compensation for the injuries suffered.
